GeoBubble Thermal Pool Blankets Compared: Sol+Guard, Standard & EnergyGuard

GeoBubble thermal blankets are the modern evolution of pool bubble wrap — same concept, dramatically better performance. Three variants are available: Sol+Guard for maximum heat gain, Standard for general use, and EnergyGuard for algae-prone pools.

CRITICAL SAFETY NOTICE

GeoBubble thermal blankets are NOT safety covers and do not prevent drowning. They float on the water and can be pulled aside by a child, pet or any movement. They do not satisfy SANS 10134:2016 safety requirements. If safety is your priority, you need a manual safety cover, hydraulic vinyl cover, or slatted automatic cover.

How GeoBubble Differs from Standard Bubble Wrap

Traditional bubble wrap pool covers used round bubbles — the same dome shape that's been used for 50 years. GeoBubble uses a patented twin-bubble geometry that:

  • Eliminates the weak point at the base of the bubble (where standard bubble wrap fails first).
  • Increases air volume per square metre by 50%.
  • Improves heat retention by 25–30% over standard bubble wrap.
  • Lasts 25–50% longer (4–6 years vs 3–4 years for standard).

The Three GeoBubble Variants

Sol+Guard (Light Blue, 500-micron)

  • Heat gain: up to 10°C above unprotected pool temperature.
  • Best for: primary heating function. Cooler regions (Cape Town, Highveld winters).
  • Lifespan: 5–6 years with proper care.
  • Material: 500-micron UV-stabilised polyethylene with twin-bubble geometry.

Standard (Dark Blue, 400-micron)

  • Heat gain: up to 8°C.
  • Best for: general-purpose use, cost-conscious buyers, mild climates.
  • Lifespan: 4–5 years.
  • Material: 400-micron UV-stabilised polyethylene.

EnergyGuard (Grey/Black, 500-micron)

  • Heat gain: up to 7°C.
  • Best for: pools with persistent algae issues, hot regions where heat retention is secondary.
  • Lifespan: 5–6 years.
  • Special property: blocks photosynthesis-driving wavelengths, dramatically reducing algae growth.
  • Bonus: reduces chlorine demand by 40–60% in algae-prone pools.

Recommendation Matrix

  • Maximum pool warmth: Sol+Guard (Light Blue, 500-micron).
  • Best value general use: Standard (Dark Blue, 400-micron).
  • Algae control / chemical reduction: EnergyGuard (Grey, 500-micron).
  • Pool in tree-shaded location: Sol+Guard (extracts maximum value from limited sun).
  • Hot Lowveld / KZN coast: EnergyGuard (heat retention secondary, algae control valuable).

Lifespan and Care

  • Avoid leaving the cover off the pool in direct sun — UV degrades unsupported sections fastest.
  • Rinse with fresh water monthly to remove pool chemicals.
  • Use a roll-up station rather than dragging across the deck.
  • Store cool and dry over winter if not in continuous use.
  • Replace at first signs of bubble collapse — performance degrades sharply once bubbles fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cut a GeoBubble blanket to fit a custom-shape pool?

Yes — GeoBubble can be field-trimmed with sharp scissors. We provide trimming guides.

Do GeoBubble covers replace a heat pump?

For mild climates, often yes. For year-round Highveld swimming, you need both.

Can children walk on a GeoBubble cover?

No — they will sink. These are NOT safety covers.

How do I clean a GeoBubble cover?

Soft brush, mild soap, fresh-water rinse. Avoid chlorine-based cleaners on the cover surface.

Which side faces the water?

The bubble side — bubbles down.
