PoolLock Hydraulic Vinyl Pool Covers: The Ultimate Safety Cover Explained
If safety is non-negotiable — young children, multiple pets, commercial liability — the PoolLock hydraulic vinyl system is the engineering answer. 250kg/m² load capacity, sub-60-second deployment, no electricity near the water, and full SABS SANS 10134:2016 plus ASTM F1346 compliance.

Safety Summary
- Load capacity: 250kg/m² when fully deployed.
- Deployment speed: under 60 seconds.
- Electrical safety: the power pack sits NEXT TO the pool pump, not the pool itself — no electricity near water.
- Compliance: SABS SANS 10134:2016 (South Africa) AND ASTM F1346 (international).
- Design intent: commercial-grade safety in a residential package.
How the Hydraulic Direct-Drive Works
PoolLock uses a hydraulic direct-drive system rather than an electric motor. A small electrical power pack (located near your pool pump, away from the water) pressurises hydraulic fluid that drives a direct-coupled rotary actuator on the cover roller.
Why Hydraulic Instead of Electric?
- Electrical separation: the only thing near the pool is hydraulic line. The electrics are 10+ metres away.
- Torque: hydraulic systems deliver constant high torque, ideal for moving large vinyl fabric loads through tracks.
- Reliability: hydraulic systems are not water-sensitive. A submerged hydraulic line is fine; a submerged electric motor is destroyed.
Why Electrical Separation Matters
South African electrical regulations (SANS 10142) require special protections for any 230V circuit within 1.5m of pool water. Even with full RCD compliance, the risk is non-zero.
PoolLock removes this risk entirely by relocating the only electrical component (the power pack) to the pool pump room, typically 5–15m from the pool. The hydraulic lines that run to the pool are mechanical — not electrical.
Understanding 250kg/m² in Real Terms
- One 80kg adult: distributed load ~80kg/m². The cover supports 3× this.
- Two children + dog: typical worst-case scenario ~120kg/m². The cover supports 2× this.
- Heavy snowfall (rare in SA): wet snow ~200kg/m². The cover handles this.
- Comparison: manual safety covers are typically 150kg/m². Slatted automatic covers vary by ledge support.
Track Systems
PoolLock uses recessed aluminium tracks running the length of the pool. The vinyl fabric runs in the tracks, sealing the edges. Track options:
- Top track: mounted on the deck surface — simplest retrofit option.
- Recessed track: built into the pool coping — cleanest aesthetic.
- Cantilevered track: for unusual pool shapes.
Vinyl Fabric Specifications
- Weight: 700–900 gsm reinforced PVC.
- Tensile strength: 3,000+ N/5cm (warp and weft).
- UV resistance: 10+ year UV stability.
- Chemical resistance: rated for chlorinated and salt-chlorinated pools.
- Drainage: integrated drainage holes or pump-fed deck drains, depending on installation.
Comparison vs Other Covers
- vs Slatted Automatic (PoolDeck): PoolLock has higher absolute load rating but PoolDeck has more visual interest. PoolLock is the safety choice; PoolDeck is the aesthetic choice.
- vs Manual Safety Cover: PoolLock is automatic (60 sec) vs manual (5–10 min). PoolLock is 250kg/m² vs manual 150kg/m². PoolLock is 3–7× the price.
- vs Thermal Blanket: Not comparable — thermal blankets are NOT safety covers.
Certification Credentials
- SABS SANS 10134:2016: South African National Standard for swimming pool safety. PoolLock systems meet all clauses.
- ASTM F1346: American standard for safety covers. International recognition.
- NSPI accreditation: Designer Pool Covers is an NSPI accredited installer.
- Insurance acceptance: South African short-term insurers accept PoolLock installation certificates as proof of compliance.
